Revolve sections

In revolving a solid you will:

  • create two new sketches

  • toggle a line to fixed

  • create a valid profile

  • revolve the profile about the axis

Goblet - revolved profile

Revolving

To create a revolved profile:

  • decide upon the orientation of the profile

    • in this example we will revolve a goblet which stands vertically so I will use the vertical plane

  • on the selected workplane create a new sketch and name it AXIS

  • on the same workplane create another sketch and name it PROFILE

  • select the sketch called AXIS

  • draw a line to become the axis of rotation (vertical in this case)

  • while the line is selected

    • from the Constraints menu select toggle fixed (stops axis moving)

  • select the PROFILE sketch

  • commencing on the axis draw the profile to be revolved - be sure to create a valid profile

  • from the Features menu select revolve profile OR select the revolve tool from the features toolbar

  • ensure that the box has the PROFILE sketch selected

  • ensure that the box has the AXIS profile selected

  • enter the angle of revolution (360 in this case)

  • at this point you should see the revolution in preview

  • click OK to complete the operation

Revolution with hole

  • decide upon the orientation of the profile

    • in this example we will revolve a wheel which lies horizontally so I will use the horizontal plane

  • on the selected workplane create a new sketch and name it AXIS

  • on the same workplane create another sketch and name it PROFILE

  • select the sketch called AXIS

  • view onto the workplane (SHIFT key + w)

  • draw a line to become the axis of rotation (vertical in this case)

  • while the line is selected

    • from the Constraints menu select toggle fixed (stops axis moving)

  • select the PROFILE sketch

  • draw the profile to be revolved - leaving a space between the profile and the axis

NOTE

The size of the hole in the centre of the model depends upon the distance between the axis and the profile

    • in this example I will use the vertical plane

  • create the design which is to be cut (a cylinder in this case)

    • draw a circle on the initial sketch and extrude to produce the cylinder

  • on the vertical workplane create a new sketch and name it AXIS

  • on the vertical workplane create another sketch and name it PROFILE

  • draw a line to become the axis of rotation (vertical in this case)

  • while the line is selected

    • from the Constraints menu select toggle fixed (stops axis moving)

  • select the PROFILE sketch

  • draw the profile to be revolved - the profile will act as a cutter to remove material

  • from the Features menu select revolve profile or select the revolve tool from the features toolbar

  • ensure that the box has the PROFILE sketch selected

  • ensure that the box has the AXIS profile selected

  • enter the angle of revolution (360 in this case)

  • select Subtract material

  • at this point you should see the revolution in preview
